SASC Shark Camp begins

Since its inception as a non-profit organisation, SASC has been dedicated to raising awareness about the exploitation of marine resources and sustainable utilisation through several core programmes and projects, including our education and outreach initiatives.

To further our mandate and meet the organisational goals, we are proud to present our new Shark Camp. Shark Camp is an educational initiative designed for youth of various ages, during which they will come face to face with the marine environment in an experiential manner.

Using all our resources and experience we hope to unveil some of the mysteries of the marine realm and give our youth the tools and knowledge required to make a difference to conservation.

Shark Camp will be running during the upcoming school holidays (March 30 - April 11). If your kids are interested in participating, please contact info@sharkconservancy.org for more information.

SASC receives grant from Save Our Seas Foundation

After several months spent anxiously awaiting feedback from the Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF) grant committee, we were awarded last Friday when Rupert Ormond - chief scientist with the SOSF - sent us an email stating our Zambezi shark grant application was successful.

This marks an exciting development for SASC which has, until now, conducted our Breede River Zambi research on a shoe-string budget (to say the least!!). The grant will enable us to purchase much-needed equipment such as VR2s (underwater receivers for passive shark tracking), coded tags and our very own VR100 to actively track the tagged sharks.

We are so grateful to the SOSF for their grant, and we look forward the further development of our working relationship with them. We also look forward to spending as much time as possible on the river, getting to know the sharks a little bit better.
